Experience Iceland’s wild Westfjords on a six-day winter photography expedition led by local experts. Capture dramatic fjords, frozen waterfalls, remote fishing villages, geothermal hot springs, and, if conditions allow, the Northern Lights. Meet your hosts

Haukur Sigurðsson

A native of the Westfjords, Haukur spent much of his adult life organizing and leading adventure tours across Iceland. These days, his main focus is photography, although he’s always happy to step back into his old role as a guide.

Haukur built and manages the Visit Westfjords social media channels and works as a photographer for many of the region’s companies and institutions. Few people know the landscapes, communities and hidden corners of the Westfjords as well as he does.

Tyler Wacker

Tyler has called Ísafjörður home for several years. He first came to the Westfjords as a student at the local university, fell in love with the region, and decided to stay and become part of the community.

An avid cyclist and outdoor adventurer, Tyler owns and operates Bikepacking Iceland, a local cycling and adventure hub based in Ísafjörður. Through his work, he spends much of his time exploring the Westfjords and helping visitors experience the region beyond the typical tourist routes.

Discover Iceland beyond the Ring Road on a six-day winter photography expedition through the breathtaking Westfjords. Explore remote fjords, snowy mountains, dramatic coastlines, waterfalls, hot springs, fishing villages, and historic sites with expert local guides.

Our flexible itinerary follows the best weather and light, creating opportunities for stunning landscape, wildlife, cultural, and night photography. Each evening, we’ll also watch the aurora forecast and head out in search of the Northern Lights when conditions are right.

With accommodation, meals, transportation, activities, and photography guidance included, this small-group adventure is the perfect way to experience the wild Westfjords and capture Iceland at its most dramatic.

Day 1 – Monday, March 29, 2027: Bolungarvík

Meet your guides in Ísafjörður before heading to the fishing village of Bolungarvík. Depending on the weather and conditions, we’ll explore a selection of photography locations, including dramatic coastal landscapes, mountain viewpoints, and local landmarks.

We’ll finish the day with an optional guided sauna ritual in Hnífsdalur, giving us a chance to warm up and relax before returning to Ísafjörður for dinner.

Day 2 – Tuesday, March 30, 2027: Ísafjörður & Dýrafjörður

Today we travel south through the spectacular Westfjords, stopping whenever the light and scenery present great photographic opportunities. We’ll visit Þingeyri and gain an insight into life in a traditional Icelandic fishing village before returning to Ísafjörður for dinner.

Day 3 – Wednesday, March 31, 2027: Ísafjörður to Patreksfjörður

We leave ísafjörður and journey toward Patreksfjörður, stopping at some of the Westfjords’ most iconic locations along the way. Depending on conditions, highlights may include Dynjandi waterfall, the BA-64 shipwreck, Rauðisandur beach, and natural hot springs. After a full day of exploring and photography, we’ll settle into Patreksfjörður for the evening.

Day 4 – Thursday, April 1, 2027: Patreksfjörður to Vogur

Today we continue through the southern Westfjords, photographing dramatic coastlines, geological formations, and remote landscapes. We’ll make our way to Vogur Country Lodge, a peaceful retreat overlooking the fjord, with opportunities to meet locals and experience authentic rural Iceland.

Day 5 – Friday, April 2, 2027: Vogur to Reykjavik

Our final day takes us out of the Westfjords and toward Reykjavík. along the way we’ll visit sites such as Eiríksstaðir, Guðrúnarlaug, and the Grabrok volcanic crater, depending on weather and road conditions. We’ll arrive in Reykjavík in the evening, where the expedition concludes with one final overnight stay.

Day 6 – Saturday, April 3, 2027: Departure

After breakfast, the tour comes to an end. Guests are free to continue exploring Reykjavík or transfer to Keflavík International Airport for their onward journey.

This tour runs from March 29 – April 3, 2027.
The tour begins in Ísafjörður on Monday, March 29, and ends after breakfast in Reykjavík on Saturday, April 3.
Guests are responsible for arranging transportation to ísafjörður before the tour begins. Due to Easster weekend, there are no domestic flights from Reykjavík to Ísafjörður on Sunday, March 28. please plan your travel accordingly.
We recommend arriving in Ísafjörður before the tour starts to avoid travel delays.
Guests are encouraged to arrive early and experience Aldrei fór ég Suður, Ísafjörður’s annual free music festival, taking place on March 26-27, 2027.
This is a small-group expedition with a maximum of seven guests, allowing for a more personal experience and individual photography guidance.
The itinerary is flexible and may change due to weather, road conditions, daylight, or photographic opportunities.
Each evening, weather permitting, we will monitor aurora forecasts and head out in search of the northern lights.
Participants should be comfortable walking on uneven terrain and in winter conditions.
Travel insurance, including coverage for photography equipment, is strongly recommended.
Icelandic weather can change rapidly, so warm, waterproof clothing and sturdy footwear are essential.
